The bad weather affecting much of the United States has caused severe disruptions at airports, and South Florida has not been an exception.
By Sunday night, hundreds of flight cancellations and delays were being reported for both departures and arrivals.
At the Miami International Airport (MIA), authorities have reported a total of 604 delayed flights and 44 cancellations.
On its part, the Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) reported 469 delays and 34 canceled flights, figures that highlight the direct impact of the weather system in the region.
The weather phenomenon that has hit the east coast of the United States since the weekend has also caused serious issues at other major airports across the country.
According to FlightAware, the platform that tracks flights in real time, the following U.S. airports were experiencing significant operational disruptions as of Sunday night:
-Orlando International Airport (MCO).
- Tampa International Airport (TPA).
- Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT).
-Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ).
-Miami International Airport (MIA).
Additionally, other airports in the northeast of the U.S. also faced difficulties, such as New York's LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Boston's Logan International Airport (BOS), both experiencing significant delays due to adverse weather conditions.
The weather system responsible for these impacts is the same one that caused flash floods in the Tennessee valley earlier this weekend and is continuing to move northeast across the country.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), "this same weather system is expected to continue causing flight issues for those traveling in the northeast on Monday,” the agency warned in its latest update.
The overall situation is critical, as this weather front has caused extreme and dangerous conditions in several states, including violent tornadoes, blinding dust storms, and rapidly spreading wildfires, which have so far resulted in at least 37 fatalities.
In Oklahoma, the Emergency Management Department reported on Sunday that more than 400 homes were damaged by wildfires that swept across the state since Friday.
In Stillwater and its surrounding areas, at least 74 homes were destroyed, confirmed Mayor Will Joyce in a statement.
Extreme weather continues to be a threat to travelers and residents in large areas of the country, while authorities urge the public to stay alert and follow official recommendations.
