A Cuban was arrested in Miami after leading a dangerous chase at over 120 miles per hour along the Palmetto Expressway (SR-826).
The failed escape attempt ended in a violent accident and an alleged attempt to bribe a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) officer, authorities reported this Tuesday.
The suspect, identified as Alejandro García Estrada, 32 years old, was arrested on Sunday following a chase that began when a FHP patrol spotted the man driving recklessly in a black Ford Mustang with white stripes, in the westbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway, near Northwest 67th Avenue.
According to the arrest report -as cited by local media- the patrol officer activated lights and sirens to attempt to stop the vehicle, but the driver abruptly accelerated, weaving around other cars and nearly causing multiple collisions while fleeing at speeds exceeding 120 mph southbound on the highway.
The chase continued until the exit of Northwest 122nd Street, where García Estrada ran a red light and collided with a white vehicle.
The strong impact caused his car to flip over and end up on its roof.
Despite the severity of the incident, the officers found the suspect trapped inside the vehicle and were able to extract him with the help of an off-duty officer from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office.
Violent resistance and failed bribery
Once out of the car, García Estrada became aggressive and resisted arrest, which forced the officers to use a Taser to subdue him.
Once detained and inside the FHP patrol car, the Cuban attempted to bribe the officer by offering him money in exchange for his release, according to the police report.
Charges and legal situation
García Estrada faces several charges, including:
-Resisting an officer with violence (two charges).
-High-speed escape and evasion from the police in a marked vehicle.
-Bribery of a law officer.
-Reckless driving causing damage to property or individuals.
He is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK) under a bond of $12,500. Authorities have not provided details about the condition of the driver of the other vehicle involved. The investigation remains ongoing.
