The fatal accident

The accident occurred at around 1:50 AM on Tuesday, March 25, on a stretch of the BR-210 highway, near Porto Grande, a municipality in the Brazilian state of Amapá.

According to the preliminary report from the Federal Highway Police, a red Volkswagen Up, traveling from Macapá deeper into the state, invaded the opposite lane and collided head-on with a gray Nissan Versa that was traveling in the opposite direction.

As a result of the violent crash, five people died at the scene, and four were injured. Of the deceased, three were of Cuban nationality.

In the Nissan were six people: a Cuban couple and their baby, a mother and daughter, also of Cuban nationality, and the driver; while in the VW were a young Brazilian couple and their six-year-old son.

According to the PRF report, the collision between the vehicles occurred near the edge of the road, on a straight stretch. Authorities believe that the driver of the VW fell asleep or attempted to make a reckless overtaking maneuver, and that the driver of the Nissan tried to swerve upon realizing that the other vehicle was coming toward him.

The cars were smashed due to the strong impact, as seen in the images published by the PRF. The engine of one of the vehicles was thrown out and ended up on the road, while the Nissan was overturned in a wooded area adjacent to the roadway.

According to a spokesperson for the PRF, the accident was “very chaotic”, which is why they had to close traffic on the road until around 8:00 a.m. Authorities are continuing to investigate the causes of the crash.
