A car that veered off the street and ended up under the awning of the Praga store in Jagüey Grande was the trigger for a scene that quickly went viral this Monday among Cuban users of social media.
However, what caught the attention of internet users the most was not the accident itself—mild, with no injuries or structural damage—but rather a detail that many did not overlook: There was light on the street!

In the midst of the severe energy crisis facing the country, with prolonged blackouts affecting both the Northern and Southern Councils of the municipality, images of the incident showed the streetlights on and the interior of the store lit up.
"Is there power in Prague?" asked a skeptical user. "They must have turned on the generator," suggested another.
The surprise at the presence of electricity overshadowed the interest in the specific fact of the accident. “The car in the driveway isn't the news, look at the lamps and you'll be shocked by the novelty!”, joked a commentator.
Others, between disbelief and sarcasm, claimed that the driver likely became dazzled due to being unaccustomed to the light, as many Cubans are used to the daily darkness.
The contrast between a brightly lit nighttime scene and the routine of blackouts generated more buzz than the out-of-control vehicle. The unexpected setting was discussed more than the other accident that occurred in the municipality this Sunday, which involved a motorcycle and a classic car (a 1958 Buick Special).
The apparent exclusivity of the Praga store in accessing electricity has raised complaints and suspicions: “How is it possible that there is no power in my area and there is in Praga?” expressed a neighbor.
Far from making headlines due to the accident, this incident highlighted an even more shocking reality for many Cubans: that in today's Cuba, seeing a lit street can be more surprising than witnessing a car lose control and drive onto the sidewalk.
