A Cuban citizen identified as Albert Fernández, 39 years old, was arrested in Miami-Dade for his alleged involvement in the theft of thousands of dollars in cash and personal belongings from a friend who had taken him in after his release from prison, reported Local 10 News.
Fernández, who has ties to the Latin Kings gang, has an extensive criminal record in Florida that dates back over a decade.
His background includes over 20 convictions, including domestic violence, assaulting a pregnant woman, and a notorious police chase in Opa-locka several years ago.
He betrayed a friend's trust
According to the arrest report, Fernández was released from the prison system on February 17, but within weeks he became a suspect in a new crime, this time in the Miami Gardens area.
The victim, who claimed to have been his friend for over 15 years, offered him lodging and assistance for his social reintegration.
However, on March 10, Fernández allegedly stole about $38,000 worth of belongings from the house, including a firearm, jewelry, clothing, and footwear.
The Miami Gardens Police indicated that the robbery was captured by the home's surveillance cameras, and that the victim also presented text messages sent by the thief, in which he expressed remorse for what had happened.
Despite this, the ex-convict was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm, which worsens his legal situation.
The Cuban was arrested for the crimes of robbery and grand theft and booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade.
During her court hearing on Wednesday, a judge denied her bail, and court records revealed that she was already facing six pending cases for probation violations, in addition to the new charge.
An extensive criminal record
Fernández, born in Cuba, has been arrested multiple times in Miami-Dade County.
At the age of 25, he was charged with assaulting a pregnant woman, and at 31, he faced charges of domestic violence involving strangulation in Hialeah.
In recent years, he was involved in a chase in a stolen truck while being sought for thefts in Miami Lakes.
Authorities have urged anyone with information related to this or other cases to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers anonymously at 305-471-8477.
