The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has again delayed the expiration date for TikTok, extending the effective deadline by 75 days to sever ties with its Chinese corporate owner, ByteDance.

In a post published this Friday on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "My Administration has been working very hard on an Agreement to save TikTok, and we have made enormous progress. The Agreement requires more work to ensure that all necessary approvals are signed, so I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok operational for an additional 75 days."

The leader stated that the administration hopes to "continue working in good faith with China, as they are not very happy with our Reciprocal Tariffs," referring to the 34 percent tax on Chinese imports that Trump announced this week.

TikTok was facing the imminent deadline of April 5 set by Trump to reach an agreement, or else it would be banned from hosting or distributing in the country.

The application has been regarded by many American lawmakers as a threat to the national security of the United States because it is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.

In January, a federal law came into effect that legally prohibited the use of TikTok throughout the country unless it separated from ByteDance, the Beijing-based tech giant that owns the viral video app, which it did not do. TikTok's parent company was required to sell its stake to a non-adversarial entity to the United States in order to avoid the ban.

The Congress approved this veto in 2024 with bipartisan support due to concerns that an app used by more than half of Americans would be controlled by China, a foreign adversary.

After TikTok

The tech giant Amazon had submitted a formal offer to acquire TikTok's operations in the United States, before the legal deadline that could lead to a ban on the popular app in the country.

The offer was delivered through a letter addressed to the U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, but the White House may not be taking Amazon's proposal seriously.

The possible sale of TikTok has attracted the interest of several technology companies and investment funds. Among the interested parties are names like Microsoft, Oracle, and Blackstone, according to specialized media. It is unclear whether Amazon is directly competing for a full purchase of the operations in the U.S. or for a partial stake.

President Donald Trump has claimed that he will not allow the app to disappear from the country. In fact, he is scheduled to meet with senior White House officials to discuss the future of the platform, which currently has 170 million users in the United States.
