Regime launches first Russian vehicle assembled in Cuba

Cuba assembles its first Russian UAZ vehicle, aiming to modernize transportation and attract investments. The project includes Patriot and Pickup models, with future plans for light cargo vehicles.

The Cuban regime launched this Friday the first Russian-made vehicle assembled on the Island: a car from the UAZ assembly line, assembled at the Integral Automotive Services Company (EISA).

During an inauguration that took advantage of the visit of the Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Dmitry Chernyshenko, to Cuba, Cuban and Russian officials praised the "strengthening of industrial ties between both countries."

Chernyshenko not only participated in a ceremony dedicated to the first UAZ Patriot assembled in Cuba, but also drove the new vehicle and traversed a section within the Cuban company EISA to mark the beginning of production.

The vehicles had been displayed at the EISA booth during the International Transportation and Logistics Fair, an event through which the regime aims to attract investments in light of the severe crisis in the transportation sector.

Last year, the government signed an agreement with the Russian company ECHO-Export SRL to assemble and repair vehicles of the UAZ brand.

The project was presented at the Cubaindustria 2024 exhibition to strengthen bilateral economic relations and modernize Cuba's transportation infrastructure, according to said Miguel Ángel Pedroso Madin, business director of the Integral Automotive Services Company (EISA) of Cuba.

This agreement initially includes the Patriot and Pickup models, and in a second phase, it is planned to assemble light cargo vehicles from the Profi brand. The goal is to replace imports, "improve" transportation directly in Cuba, and take advantage of the adaptability of these vehicles for any economic sector, the source mentions.

Russian and Cuban entrepreneurs noted last year during the signing of the agreement that Pickup models could be transformed into hearses, one of the major issues facing the transportation sector.

UAZ has had a presence on the Island for 20 years and also plans to offer after-sales and warranty services that promote the sustainability of the vehicles and extend their lifespan, through the regular supply of Russian parts and components, as clarified by Ruslán Ignátev, technical director and deputy representative of ECHO-Export SRL.
