The city of Tampa continues to celebrate its connection to Cuba. Just a few days ago, hundreds of people filled the historic Ybor City district during the 14th Annual Cuban Sandwich Festival, where chefs and restaurants competed for the title of best sandwich of the year.
Between guarapos, pressed salami, and debates between Tampa and Miami over the authenticity of pork sandwiches with pickles, it became clear: the Cuban flavor is more alive than ever in Florida. And now, the celebration continues.
Organized by United Citizens Coalition, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Latino culture, the Cuban Flavor Fest will take place next Saturday, April 12, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Al Lopez Park in Tampa.
This festival, which promises an unforgettable experience, filled with live music, traditional cuisine, and activities for the whole family, was created with the goal of celebrating and showcasing the rich Cuban heritage that has significantly influenced the cultural identity of the region.
According to Tatiana Cox, one of the event organizers, the initiative arose from the need to highlight Cuban culture in Tampa. "There are no festivals in Tampa that fully celebrate Cuban culture, specifically its salsa music, its gastronomy, and the popular Rueda de Casino, among other traditions. We want to bring all those elements together and connect them with Tampa's culture," she told Centro Tampa Bay.
The festival will offer a variety of activities that reflect the essence of Cuba, including live music, a domino tournament, exhibitions by Cuban cigar makers, traditional food, and activities for children.
This first edition of the Sabor Cubano Fest marks a milestone in promoting Cuban identity in the Tampa Bay area. The festival joins other successful events organized by United Citizens Coalition, such as the Tampa Taco Fest and the Parrandón Fest, which have attracted thousands of attendees in previous years.
"Since last year, we have been thinking about what to do, something not only related to Cuban culture but also to honor the culture of Tampa, which is closely linked to the Cuban heritage in this area," emphasized Cox.
