The prominent Cuban futsal scorer, Maykol Girón Rosabal, has arrived in Spain with the goal of continuing his sports career in a more competitive environment.

The news was confirmed by the independent Cuban media 14 y Medio, which detailed that the 24-year-old originally from Granma arrived in Madrid last Tuesday accompanied by his wife, a Spanish citizen, and with a six-month visa.

In his Facebook account, Maykol wrote: “The day has come to start from 0. Thank you to everyone who was part of the process,” highlighting the symbolic and emotional significance of this new beginning.

His sports career is remarkable despite coming from a family of weightlifters, he excelled in soccer from a young age, representing Cuba in youth categories and participating in international tournaments such as the Cayman Airways International Youth Football Cup in the Cayman Islands.

Subsequently, he established himself in futsal, winning national titles with Granma and Ciego de Ávila. In the most recent domestic tournament, he finished with 51 goals, which earned him the recognition as the top scorer of the competition.

Moreover, Girón was part of the Cuban U-23 team that won the gold medal at the first Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe 2022 and participated in friendly matches against Venezuela and Costa Rica.

However, his exclusion from the national team for the Concacaf Championship in Nicaragua 2024 and the World Cup in Uzbekistan that same year generated controversy and discontent around him.

The emigration of Cuban athletes has been a constant in recent years, reflecting the economic hardships and limited professional opportunities on the island.

The National Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (INDER) has acknowledged that the migration of athletes has significantly impacted Cuban sports. For the 2023 Pan American Games in Chile, 62% of the 362 participating Cuban athletes were making their debut in this type of event, highlighting the youth and inexperience of the delegation due to the loss of experienced talent.

According to reports, more than 60 Cuban athletes abandoned delegations or violated contracts abroad during 2022. This trend continued in 2023, with over a hundred athletes leaving the island in search of better conditions, and it repeated in 2024, where there are examples of national delegation departures at various events.

For instance, in November 2024, three members of the national handball team left the training camp in France while preparing for the World Championship that will take place in 2025 in Croatia.

The ongoing exodus of athletes reflects the crisis facing the country, where economic constraints, a lack of opportunities, and uncertainty have diminished the potential of a nation that has historically been recognized as a world sports powerhouse.
