Cuban long jumper Lester Lescay can now compete for Spain

The long jumper Lester Lescay, originally from Cuba and currently an athlete for Facsa Playas de Castellón, has received authorization to compete representing Spain in international events.

After receiving the National Identity Document (DNI) and the approval from World Athletics, Lescay is now eligible to be part of the Spanish team.

"We can't wait to see you in action", the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation said on Instagram to welcome the 23-year-old jumper.

Lescay has a personal best of 8.35 meters in the long jump, achieved on June 23, 2024, placing him in sixth position in the world ranking for that year.

Previously, he was the runner-up in the U-18 World Championship and the champion of the Youth Olympic Games in 2018.

After defecting from Cuba in 2022, after competing in Belgrade, Serbia, and marrying in Spain, he began the process to obtain Spanish nationality without the need for approval from the Council of Ministers.

During this time, he has resided in Spain and has competed nationally with Facsa Playas de Castellón, contributing to the achievement of titles such as the Honor Division Club League and the Short Track Club Cup.

With his recent eligibility, Lescay will focus this season on the European Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn and the Outdoor World Championship in Tokyo, which will take place in September.

In addition, he will be able to participate in the absolute Spanish championships and continue competing in club events with his team.

In 2018, at just 16 years old, Lescay achieved a personal best of 7.91 meters at a youth athletics event at the Pedro Marrero Stadium in Havana, surpassing her previous record of 7.79 meters, which had earned her a silver medal at the Junior World Championship.
