In Miami, where the heat is relentless and pools are plentiful, a typical scene went viral thanks to the unique style of a Cuban mother and her four-legged “son.”
The site Only in Dade shared the hilarious moment when a woman saves her little dog —an apparent Yorkshire Terrier— from drowning in her pool and scolds him in a classic Caribbean style.
The video, captured by a security camera, shows the little dog splashing desperately, trying to get out of the water unsuccessfully.
Suddenly, a middle-aged woman bursts onto the scene, running in flip-flops with the rhythm and urgency of a Cuban mother coming to the rescue. In a matter of seconds, she reaches in, pulls out an object, and sets it safely on the edge.
But the best part came after. Like a mischievous child who stuck their fingers in an outlet, the woman utters a phrase that has gone viral: “Are you eating poop?!” followed by the epic punchline: “Cojontra!” — an explosive combination of the expressions “cojones” and “contra,” which only a Cuban mother could use with such flair.
The post has sparked an avalanche of reactions: laughter, translations for non-Spanish speakers, and tributes to the unmistakable sound of flip-flops hitting the ground. “That ‘cojontra’ came from the soul,” wrote one user. Another perfectly summed up the moment: “It gave me a rescue, the sound effect of the flip-flop, it gave me a scolding, all perfect.”
Beyond the humor, the video also sparked reflections on pet safety around pools. But, as good Cubans, what stuck with us the most was the blend of drama, tenderness, and scolding… all with a taste of home.
Because if there's one thing we Cubans know, it's that love is expressed through shouts, flip-flops, and unforgettable phrases. And this video is living proof (and wet!) of that.
