Change in flight regulations: U.S. warns about mandatory Real ID

Starting May 7, a Real ID will be required for domestic flights and access to federal buildings in the U.S. This measure aims to enhance security and prevent identity fraud.

The Department of Homeland Security of the United States warned this Friday about the Real ID (real identification), a requirement that must be presented as a mandatory document to board domestic flights, starting May 7.

"If you plan to travel by airplane, make sure to obtain a valid identification document so that you are not denied boarding or face delays," wrote on social media Kristi Noem, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security.

In a brief video, the official specified that starting from May 7, a real identification will be required to fly, as these authentic documents "make it more difficult to forge identity documents, thus preventing the actions of criminals and terrorists."

The requirement will also be mandatory to visit federal buildings in the United States.

"These IDs keep our country safe because they help prevent fraud and enhance security. Please do your part to protect our country," said Noem.

The government page of some states, such as New York, clarifies that if the state license or identification does not have a star or a flag on it, then it is not a REAL ID compliant document.

In this regard, they refer to "real" identification as a driver's license, learner's permit, or non-driver identification issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) that complies with federal standards. If a valid passport is not available, that license will be the credential presented before boarding a domestic flight (within the U.S.).

The U.S. government developed an interactive tool for individuals to check which document would be accepted as a Real ID. To do this, they must select whether they have a driver's license and which state they plan to travel to.

The measure is part of the implementation of the Real ID Act of 2005, aimed at increasing security at airports and minimizing the risks of document forgery by addressing enhanced security features, such as special markings, holograms.

Generally, identification that complies with Real ID typically has a gold or black star in the upper right corner.

It is recommended to update your license or identification if it does not include this mark. To obtain a Real ID, you must go to the DMV of your state of residence with documents that prove your identity: birth certificate or valid passport, Social Security number verification, proof of residence, and legal status in the country.

The impact of the measure is greater on the immigrant population as undocumented individuals will not be able to board domestic flights.

Although the Real ID is not mandatory for driving or living in the country, its requirement for air travel within the national territory marks a turning point that many immigrants are not prepared to face.

Frequently Asked Questions about Real ID and its Implications in the U.S.

What is the Real ID and why is it important for traveling in the U.S.?

The Real ID is a form of identification issued by states, territories, or the federal government of the U.S. that meets enhanced security standards, such as special features and anti-counterfeiting measures. Starting May 7, 2025, it will be mandatory to board domestic flights and access federal facilities in the United States.

How can I find out if my identification meets the requirements for Real ID?

Identifications that comply with Real ID regulations typically have a gold or black star in the upper right corner. If your identification does not have this mark, you will need to update it by visiting your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with the required documents that prove your identity, residency, and legal status.

What documents do I need to obtain a Real ID?

To obtain a Real ID, you will need to present several documents at the DMV: a birth certificate or valid passport, proof of Social Security number, proof of residency, and legal status in the country. It is important to consult with local state authorities to know the specific requirements.

How does the Real ID affect immigrants in the U.S.?

The Real ID poses an additional challenge for many immigrants who still do not have the necessary documentation to meet these requirements. The measure has raised concerns within immigrant communities, particularly among those without legal status, as they will not be able to board domestic flights without compatible identification.

What happens if I don’t have a Real ID after May 7, 2025?

Starting May 7, 2025, travelers without a Real ID-compliant identification will not be able to board domestic flights unless they present a valid passport or another form of identification accepted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). It is recommended to obtain the Real ID in advance to avoid delays or issues at airports.
