This is what a Cuban spent on a basic purchase at Walmart: "Expensive or cheap?"

A Cuban in the U.S. showcases his basic $208 purchase at Walmart on TikTok, sparking debate over the cost of living. Reactions vary between those who see the expense as justified and those who consider it excessive.

A Cuban resident in the United States shared on social media the amount he spent on what he considered a "basic" purchase at Walmart, and the video has generated various reactions among his followers, both on the island and abroad.

In the recording published on TikTok by the user @sergitosant, the young man shows a list of products purchased at the store, which includes everyday food items such as bananas, tomatoes, eggs, bread, cream cheese, butter, mozzarella and gouda cheese, milk, chocolate ice cream, chips, chicken breast, sugar, juices, coffee, and tostones, among others.

Upon reaching the checkout and scanning all the items, the total came to 208 dollars. The Cuban then poses a direct question to the camera: “Expensive or cheap?”, thus igniting a debate in the comments.

"This is a basic purchase," she explains in the video while showing the items laid out on the conveyor belt of the supermarket.

The video addresses the perception of the cost of living in the United States, especially among those who have recently emigrated or those in Cuba trying to make comparisons with food prices in the country.

Although $208 may seem like a high amount for a single purchase, many users pointed out that the quantity of products acquired, as well as the variety and access to quality options, justify the cost. Others, however, considered it excessive for what they defined as a "perfectly normal" purchase.

From the island, where accessing a similar purchase can be almost impossible due to scarcity and the high prices of the informal market, some users reacted with astonishment and resignation.

Sergito's video has already amassed thousands of views on TikTok and has stirred mixed opinions. Some followers in the U.S. agreed that the spending is reasonable given the inflation and rising food prices. Other Cubans living abroad shared their own experiences comparing supermarkets and strategies for saving.

"That's right, here in Miami it costs more," wrote one user. "In Cuba, even with a hundred MLC, you can't make that purchase," added another.

Amid the rising cost of living both on and off the island, the publication of this type of content continues to create spaces for reflection among Cubans from both sides regarding daily economics and the inevitable comparison between two opposing realities.
