The Meat Company of Sancti Spíritus inaugurated on Friday a line for the production of mechanically deboned "meat" (MDM, in English), reportedly the first of its kind in Cuba.

According to the official local press, the company plans to produce around 60 tons monthly of this MDM meat, which is used as a filler in the production of various types of food.

The MDM will include "products derived from the production process in the units linked to the entity" and others coming from the slaughter of pigs, cattle, and poultry, primarily.

"A range that substitutes imports for the country and can lower the costs of finished foods," praised the press, without specifying which foods will be included in this MDM.

Donis Gómez Salas, director of the Meat Company of Sancti Spíritus, explained that the cost of the production line was 500,000 dollars, although they promise to recover the investment.

"The ton of MDM is priced around $1,000 in the international market, and by obtaining about 60 tons monthly here, a significant amount of foreign currency would be saved. Furthermore, that quantity converted into sausages would contribute nearly 2,000 tons," he said.

The scarcity of meat products in Cuba is one of the major crises facing Cubans.
