U.S. authorities have revealed new details about the identity of the suspect responsible for the shooting that occurred this Thursday on the campus of Florida State University (FSU), in Tallahassee, which left at least two dead and several injured.

The alleged shooter was identified as Phoenix Ikner, a 20-year-old student at the university and son of a deputy sheriff in Leon County, as confirmed by Sheriff Walt McNeil at a press conference.

Ikner was not a stranger to the police environment. According to McNeil, the young man was a member of the Youth Advisory Council of the Sheriff’s Department, and had actively participated in training programs organized by the agency.

“The fact that he had access to a weapon does not surprise us”, the sheriff noted, explaining that Ikner was a well-known figure within the department due to his involvement in youth activities.

Currently, this student remains hospitalized with an injury, although authorities have not specified the severity of his health condition or whether he was injured during his arrest or during the shooting.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Ikner used a gun owned by his mother, a veteran with 18 years of service in the Leon County Sheriff's Department. The weapon was an old service firearm that had been legally acquired by the officer.

“Unfortunately, your son had access to one of your weapons, and that was one of the ones found at the scene,” McNeil confirmed. Authorities are still investigating whether Ikner had access to other weapons and how exactly he obtained the firearm used in the shooting.

The attack occurred around 11:50 a.m. on Thursday, near the student union building at FSU. The university immediately activated its emergency alert system, instructing students and staff to shelter in place due to the presence of an active shooter.

A strong security operation was deployed by the FBI and local police forces. Around 3:00 p.m., the alert system reported that the threat had been “neutralized”, allowing students to return to their residences.

However, authorities recommend avoiding the area around the student center, which is still regarded as an active crime scene while investigations are ongoing.

Until now, the identities of the deceased victims have not been revealed, nor has the motive for the attack been determined. Authorities have stated that the investigation remains open and that more details will be provided as the case progresses.

After the attack, the president of FSU, Richard McCullough, addressed the university community to condemn the "tragic and absurd act of violence that occurred on campus."

"We are heartbroken. We are mourning with the families, friends, and loved ones of those who lost their lives,” McCullough stated. “We hold the injured close and support everyone who is suffering.”

From other academic institutions, expressions of support have also been voiced. The interim president of the University of Florida, Kent Fuchs, posted a message on social media X addressed to the FSU community.

“Our most heartfelt thoughts and deepest condolences to the family of Florida State University”, Fuchs wrote. “Our hearts are with all those affected by the shootings and with their loved ones”.
