Nathaly Montero, a Cuban resident of the neighborhood La Güinera in the Havana municipality of Arroyo Naranjo, reported on social media that her own mother and stepfather were caught by her while allegedly attempting to steal from her home.
The woman has criticized the police's attitude when she went to file the report.
According to Montero, the events occurred around 1:00 a.m. this Tuesday, when he discovered his mother, Yahima Peñalba Cruzata, and his stepfather, Adrián Martínez Sotolongo, in the courtyard of their home.
The complainant says that when she was discovered, her mother claimed to be hiding from her partner because he wanted to kill her, a version that the young woman considers false, as she states that - even though they live two blocks apart - there were many "paladares" open at that time where she could have sought refuge if it were truly a matter of life or death.
It also assures that Adrián would have told the woman: "Yahima, go out so they don't make noise”, before both of them fled across the neighbors' rooftops.
Montero claims she immediately called the police, but they never showed up at the scene. Later, when trying to file the report at the Capri station, she was informed that the case “does not proceed due to being family members.”
Law 159 would have been cited by the authorities as a reason for inaction.
Outraged, she also reported that the authorities treated her in a hostile manner and warned her that if she confronted the intruders, she would be the one facing charges.
"In my house, we only have women living here, a 7-year-old girl and an elder person," she warned in her post, highlighting the vulnerability they are facing.
The young woman also pointed out that her mother and her partner would be "police informants," which would explain, according to her, the institutional protection they apparently receive.
In the final segment of her publication, Nathaly Montero referred to a message from her mother that had reached her through an aunt.
"Had they really wanted to steal from me, they would have done it and we wouldn't have noticed. But we heard them because one of them stumbled or fell on a zinc we have here," concluded Nathaly, who warns that "they are professional thieves" and "they go out to steal at that hour every day."

Discontent and support on social media
Nathaly's post sparked dozens of comments that revealed a widespread sense of social discontent.
Numerous users expressed disbelief at the fact that a mother could be involved in a criminal act against her own daughter; others described the situation as unacceptable and urged the complainant to take the case to higher authorities such as the Prosecutor's Office or the Ministry of the Interior.
Many internet users expressed distrust in the actions of the police, noting that similar situations have frequently occurred without legal consequences; others emphasized that there should be no impunity due to family ties and that justice must prevail.
A smaller group expressed discomfort with Nathaly publicly exposing her mother, noting that while the events are serious, “a mother is sacred” or “one should not disclose family matters on social media,” thus creating a slight contrast between family loyalty and the duty to report criminal acts.
In the comments section, the young woman reiterated that her mother is engaged in stealing alongside her partner and that many times she is the one who enters the homes because she is "skinny".
Sources close to the affected young woman indicated that the mother of the complainant has done many things in the past and that she does not owe her any consideration.
Although unusual, this is not the first time a report of theft or attempted theft within a family has made its way to social media.
In June 2023, a Cuban residing in Italy reported that her brother allegedly broke into her home to steal several valuable items after taking a set of keys to the house from their father, located in the Colón neighborhood of Centro Habana.
