The police authorities stated that the suspect arrested for stealing the Gucci bag belonging to the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, is a Chilean citizen who was in the United States unlawfully.
According to police sources confirmed to The New York Post, Mario Bustamante-Leiva, 49 years old, originally from Santiago, Chile, was arrested this Saturday after allegedly seizing the luxury bag that contained $3,000 in cash, while Noem was dining with her family at The Capital Burger in Washington, DC, last Sunday.
It is believed that Bustamante-Leiva, who is illegally in the United States, is part of a large organization of thieves from the East Coast, and law enforcement continues to search for another undocumented immigrant who was his accomplice.
The U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security referred to the Chilean as a "criminal" on the social network X and criticized undocumented individuals in the U.S.
"This individual is a career criminal who has been in our country illegally for years," said the official.
Moreover, he justified the migration campaign that the Trump administration has undertaken against undocumented individuals, whom he has repeatedly labeled as criminals.
"Unfortunately, so many families in this country have become victims of crime, and that is why President Trump is working every day to make the United States safe and remove these foreign criminals from our streets."
Prosecutor Ed Martin stated that it is unlikely Noem was the target due to her high-profile position, adding that the suspects were likely drawn to the expensive Gucci handbag, which also contained her driver's license, passport, DHS badge, and apartment keys.
"Frankly, it was a very nice handbag. It wasn't an amateur. It was a person, a thief, who knew how to do it. You could see how he explored the room," Martin said to NBC News.
Bustamante-Leiva had been arrested in 2015 for a wave of thefts in London, where he acquired phones, wallets, and computers worth nearly $28,000, according to the Daily Mail.
Since taking office, Noem has advocated for hardline immigration policies, which align with the rhetoric and priorities of President Trump. She has been particularly critical of the humanitarian parole program established by the Biden administration, which she accused of “fostering migration chaos” and jeopardizing national security.
