The accident, which could have ended in tragedy, was caused by a driver who did not reside in Granma and who, according to Ortiz, was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

"We will continue to uphold discipline, responsibility, humanism, and good judgment among those who, without any right, endanger the lives of others as well as their own," wrote the official in her post, emphasizing the seriousness of the act of irresponsibility that led to the accident.

The initial reports about the incident indicated that at least three people were injured this Saturday in a mass accident that occurred in the neighborhood of Los Guayitos, in the municipality of Río Cauto, Granma province, according to a report from the local Government on its Facebook page.

The accident occurred in the afternoon on the Bayamo - Las Tunas road, when a truck coming from Camagüey, loaded with raw materials and destined for Manzanillo, lost control while turning back.

The vehicle was carrying 11 people, including three minors, the statement emphasized.

At that moment, it was reported that, as a result of the accident, one person suffered a skull fracture, another sustained a cervical injury, and a third person, the driver of the vehicle, sustained a hip fracture.

Initially, the injured were transported to the Ernesto Guevara de la Serna Polyclinic in Vado del Yeso by the medical emergency service (SIUM) of Granma, and later referred to the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Provincial Hospital in Bayamo for specialized care.

According to the preliminary technical review, the cause of the accident was the loss of steering of the vehicle in rainy conditions, which affected the control of the trailer on the wet asphalt, as stated by the government account.

However, this Sunday the main provincial leader clarified that the driver was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
