Two alleged thieves were arrested this Wednesday in Havana thanks to the swift intervention of citizens who noticed their suspicious behavior inside a bus in front of the Emergency Hospital.

The incident was reported by the official spokesperson Frank Enrique on Facebook, where he described the scene as a "citizen intervention" that allowed them to apprehend the individuals before they could escape.

According to the report, the two individuals were intercepted by the community upon noticing that they were carrying pockets and backpacks filled with mobile phones and clothing items, which they could not justify.

Unlike what happens in most similar cases, the police arrived in just three minutes after receiving the alert, managing to control the situation without any major incidents being reported.

“This fact highlights the importance of collaboration between the community and law enforcement to maintain peace and safety in public spaces,” the spokesperson stated, without providing further details about the identity of those detained or the fate of the seized items.

The location of the incident, close to a hospital and right in the public thoroughfare, amplifies the impact of the event in terms of public perception of safety.

These types of spontaneous interventions by citizens have become increasingly common in a context marked by a rise in petty thefts and urban crime in Havana, where many Cubans choose to take action in response to the inaction or delays of the authorities.

Amid a growing perception of insecurity in Cuba, several recent episodes reflect the inaction or inability of authorities to address the rise in crime in urban areas, particularly in Havana.

In one of the most notable cases, a resident of the Arroyo Naranjo municipality publicly reported the theft of her water tank, which occurred directly from the property outside her home.

Despite having identified the alleged perpetrator, the authorities did not take action, citing a lack of gasoline, transportation, and personnel, which forced the family to conduct their own investigation without judicial success.

This is in addition to a violent assault that occurred in March, in which a young man was stabbed by four individuals in a residential area of Havana.

The incident left the community in shock, and although it went viral on social media, there has been no significant response from the police.

In a similar situation, a foreign tourist was intercepted in Old Havana by thieves who, after robbing her, fled leaving behind only her sneakers, while the rest of her belongings were taken.

The incident caused alarm among residents and visitors, particularly due to its occurrence in supposedly monitored tourist areas.
