The Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel declared an Official Mourning this May 16, from 6:00 a.m. to midnight, following the passing of former Uruguayan president José Alberto Mujica Cordano.
He is globally remembered as Pepe Mujica, an emblematic figure of the Latin American left. He served as president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015. He maintained "historic and friendly relations with the Cuban government."
However, in the final stage of his life, he spoke harshly about the regimes in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. In an interview, he concluded that "it doesn't work", referring to the politics and government systems in these countries.
José Mujica (Montevideo, May 20, 1935 - May 13, 2025) gained international sympathy for his austere lifestyle and a direct, clear speech with which he defended principles of social justice and sovereignty.
His death was reported this Tuesday, and Miguel Díaz-Canel shared some words of condolence on social media.
"Our America mourns the departure of Mujica. His extraordinary life recalls the dark era of the military dictatorships supported by Washington, but also the hopeful period of the left in power and the unfulfilled dream of integration. Do not forget," said the Cuban leader.
The announcement of the Official Mourning was made this Thursday by the Presidency of Cuba. They noted that throughout his long career as head of state and political leader, Mujica was recognized for his contributions to Latin American integration, as well as for his support of Cuba during key moments in recent history.
The Cuban flag will fly at half-mast on all public buildings and military institutions across the Island as a sign of respect and mourning this Friday.
