A group of pickpockets stole a cell phone from a passenger on a bus in Havana, in what is becoming a common occurrence in public life in the capital

“Unfortunately, we must inform you of a heartbreaking incident. On bus 507 of route P9, at 6:43 a.m. on May 5, 2025, a group of pickpockets stole a cell phone from a passenger,” reads a post from the official group Transportación Habana TH.

In a video shared in the post, it can be seen how the passengers tell the driver not to open the door and to call the police, while the alleged pickpockets ask for the opposite.

"We urge all passengers that, when boarding a bus, they store their mobile devices, headphones, and belongings in secure places. Pickpockets are lurking, looking for opportunities to cause harm," the post warned, which was commented on by dozens of users expressing their discontent.

A large number of users complained that pickpockets operate on various public transport routes in Havana with complete impunity.

"That issue is getting serious, and my son was also a victim of a situation like that between the Amejerias and the Coppelia, and the driver didn't cooperate when asked not to open the doors, which was the very first thing he did," Enrique Corría reported.

For her part, the user Silvia Fernández stated that it is a common practice on the P9 route.

"I've already given up on using it. This isn't new; it's been happening for a while now, they even tear your bags to steal your things."

Thefts in public transportation in Havana

Thefts on public transportation in Cuba have become another reality that residents on the island must face, as these situations provide opportunities for thieves who take advantage of pushes, crowds, and disturbances among people to commit their misdeeds.

In December of last year, an incident involving a pickpocket on a public transport bus in Havana resulted in police intervention.

The bus driver, who was carrying a full load of passengers, halted the vehicle and instructed the travelers in the front section to get off, as the theft had occurred in that area.

Once outside, the victim and a man who appeared to be suspicious argued in front of two police officers who had arrived at the scene. The video ends when one of the officers starts to search the individual.

In September, two alleged pickpockets were arrested after attempting to steal a cellphone from a young man on a bus of the P3 route, in 10 de Octubre, Havana.

The incident occurred at the Porvenir stop between Fonts and Bouza, when a mother was trying to board the P3 with her son.

In this case, the two wrongdoers took advantage of the crowd to steal a mobile phone from the boy's pocket, but the victim realized the theft in time and confronted the pickpockets.

The individuals were subsequently arrested by the officers of patrol car 424, who transported them to the Aguilera station in Lawton.

Frequently Asked Questions About Theft and Vandalism on Public Transport in Havana

Why are thefts common on the buses in Havana?

Thefts are common due to overcrowding and lack of security in public transportation. The economic crisis and scarcity of resources in Cuba have exacerbated insecurity, allowing pickpockets to operate with impunity in an overloaded and inadequate transportation system.

How is the police responding to thefts on public transport in Havana?

The police intervene in some incidents, detaining suspects when possible. However, the frequency of these crimes reflects a broader security crisis, where the population often has to rely on themselves for protection due to the insufficient response from the authorities.

What measures have been proposed to improve safety in public transportation in Cuba?

So far, the measures have been primarily reactive, such as police interventions following incidents. Although there are calls for citizen reporting and collaboration with the police, the absence of a comprehensive and proactive strategy continues to leave passengers in a vulnerable situation.

What impact do acts of vandalism have on public transportation in Havana?

Vandalism worsens the critical situation of public transport, causing material damage and creating a climate of insecurity. These incidents not only further deteriorate an already collapsed system, but also increase social frustration and directly impact the mobility of citizens.

What can passengers do to protect themselves from theft on buses in Havana?

Passengers should keep their belongings in safe places and remain aware of their surroundings. It is recommended to avoid using visible mobile devices and headphones on buses, and to collaborate with other passengers to identify and report any suspicious behavior to the authorities.
