Miami anticipates a record number of travelers this Memorial Day: Here are the airport's recommendations

With more than 900,000 passengers estimated during the Memorial Day weekend, Miami International Airport is implementing key recommendations to address potential delays due to rain, streamline security processes, and optimize travel time.

The Miami International Airport (MIA) is preparing to welcome more than 900,000 passengers during the Memorial Day weekend, from Thursday, May 22, to Tuesday, May 27.

An average of 156 thousand travelers per day is expected, a figure similar to last year's record, making this period one of the busiest of the year for the airport terminal, reported in a statement by the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO).

The mayor of Miami-Dade, Daniella Levine Cava, publicly thanked the airport staff and community partners for ensuring a safe and smooth experience for travelers, and emphasized the role of MIA as a global gateway to the diversity and vibrancy of Miami.

"From our beaches to Michelin-starred restaurants, Miami has it all, and MIA proudly connects travelers to that unique experience," he stated.

Rainy season and possible delays

The start of the rainy season in South Florida, which runs from May to October, brings frequent afternoon downpours and electrical activity, which can impact flight operations.

During thunderstorms, ground crews must halt operations for safety, which may cause temporary delays. MIA ensures that it has safety protocols and real-time updates to keep travelers informed.

Some key tips for stress-free travel from MIA provided by the authorities, especially aimed at those planning to fly this long weekend, were:

Before the flight:

  • Arrive at the airport at least three hours before the scheduled departure.
  • Check in online from home to save time.
  • Check the flight status at www.miami-airport.com or through the official MIA app.

Transportation and parking:

  • Consider using taxis or ride-sharing services to avoid congestion.
  • Affordable parking available at the Economy Park and Ride Lot, with a reduced rate.
  • Valet parking service at doors 2 and 20 of the Dolphin and Flamingo garages.
  • Free waiting area for passenger pick-up ("cell phone lot") available near LeJeune Road and NW 31st Street.

TSA control and documentation:

  • Desde el 7 de mayo de 2025, se exige una REAL ID identification o pasaporte válido para vuelos domésticos.
  • It is recommended to bring in your carry-on luggage: medications, important documents, a phone charger, and a change of clothes.
  • To expedite the security process: wear easily removable shoes, follow the 3-1-1 rule for liquids, and avoid prohibited items.

For international flights:

  • The Mobile Passport Control app can be used to expedite the customs process.
  • There are accessible lanes for passengers with reduced mobility, upon request.

The Memorial Day, known in Spanish as the Día de los Caídos, is an official commemoration in the United States held on the last Monday of May each year. Its purpose is to honor and remember the American soldiers who died in combat while serving in the country's armed forces.

This date has deep historical roots that trace back to the American Civil War, when ceremonies began to be held to honor those who fell in battle. Over time, it became established as a national holiday.

In addition to commemorative events, parades, and visits to military cemeteries, Memorial Day also marks the unofficial start of summer in the U.S., making it one of the busiest weekends for domestic tourism, family gatherings, and sales promotions.

Therefore, the solemn remembrance of fallen heroes is combined with an atmosphere of recreation and travel, like those that gather large crowds at airports such as Miami.
