Two boating accidents that occurred over the weekend at different locations in the Florida Keys resulted in at least six people being hospitalized.

The first of the incidents occurred on Saturday afternoon near Big Torch Key, in the Lower Keys, when a Skeeter catamaran violently crashed into a coral reef at high speed, causing the vessel to overturn, reported the Miami Herald.

According to reports from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the boat operator, Alex Ortega, 46, and his companion, Ana Lillian Ortega, 41, were ejected from the boat due to the impact.

Both were rescued and urgently transported to a local hospital. So far, their health status has not been officially updated. The FWC continues to investigate the causes of the accident.

A little over an hour earlier, at 2:20 p.m., another accident occurred further north, when a 1976 Mako center console boat, operated by a 17-year-old teenager, collided with the iconic Seven Mile Bridge in the Middle Keys.

The impact was so strong that several of the seven people on board were thrown into the water. Other sailors in the area acted quickly to rescue them and bring them ashore.

Four of the occupants were hospitalized, some in serious condition, and airlifted by medical helicopter (Trauma Star) to hospital facilities in Miami-Dade.

The spokesperson for the FWC, Arielle Callender, confirmed that the cause of the accident is under active investigation. The identities and conditions of the injured individuals have not been officially disclosed.

Both incidents have reignited concerns about safety in recreational boating in the Florida Keys, a popular destination among tourists and local residents.

The complexity of the waters, the presence of reefs, and the increase in maritime traffic during weekends raise the risks of accidents if navigation rules are not strictly followed.

Authorities reiterate the call to exercise extreme caution when operating vessels, especially regarding inexperienced drivers, and to adhere to safety protocols to prevent tragedies like these from occurring again.
