Kevin Hernández, a young Cuban YouTuber at just 20 years old, has joined the long list of digital creators on the island who have chosen to leave the country in search of a better future.
His first destination was Guyana, a country he had previously traveled to, and he remembers that the hardest part of experiencing another reality was returning to Cuba and being able to compare.
“My family never had the resources to support me well, much less to let me leave the country,” Kevin clarifies. Thanks to his work as a content creator, what he had in Cuba and could sell, and the financial assistance from friends and subscribers, he and his partner, the digital creator Dariel Vázquez, were able to gather the money to leave.
In describing the country he leaves behind, Kevin sums up: “In Cuba, you have absolutely nothing (...) I love Cuba, but without a doubt, the system that has been in place in Cuba for almost 70 years has turned it into everything but a country, a landfill, a country of criminals, a place where people are starving, nationwide blackouts across Cuba, blackouts lasting up to four days during which our food spoiled, slow internet, struggling to find food because even having money, you couldn't find any, seeing your family outside of Havana struggle because there were not even three hours of electricity a day.”
The hardest part for Kevin, as it has been for thousands of Cubans, was leaving behind his family, friends, and his beloved pet.
The young man has yet to reveal the final destination of his journey or which country he is currently in, but he promised his followers that he will soon share more videos of his new life outside of Cuba.
