The president Donald Trump reignited controversy this Monday by posting on Truth Social a message that, rather than paying tribute to the American soldiers who lost their lives on Memorial Day, was used to attack his political opponents, the judicial system, and his predecessor, Joe Biden.

The message – written entirely in capital letters – has been described by various media outlets as controversial due to its aggressive tone and content filled with insults, accusations, and incendiary rhetoric.

“Happy Memorial Day to everyone, including the scum who spent the last four years trying to destroy our country through their radical and twisted leftist minds”, he wrote at the beginning of his post.

He then added that these individuals "allowed the illegal entry of 21,000,000 people into our country -many of whom are criminals and mentally ill- through an open border that only an incompetent president would approve."

Trump accused U.S. judges of protecting foreign criminals with the goal of "keeping in our country murderers, drug traffickers, rapists, gang members, and ex-convicts"; and insisted that these magistrates "hate the United States" and "suffer from a sick ideology that is very dangerous for our country."

Capture of Truth Social

In the United States, Memorial Day is a national day of mourning to honor the members of the armed forces who lost their lives in service.

Traditionally, this date is commemorated with solemnity, official events, flowers, and speeches focused on national unity and sacrifice.

In this context, some American media point out that it is neither culturally nor protocol-wise appropriate to wish someone a “Happy Memorial Day”, as it is not a festive celebration, but rather a day of respect and remembrance.

However, Trump not only chose to undermine that purpose, but he also delivered a message that was entirely written in capital letters and filled with disparagement.

“Let us hope that the Supreme Court of the United States and other good and compassionate judges across the country save us from the decisions of these monsters who want our country to go to hell,” he concluded.

In addition to the message on social media, Trump attended the traditional ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, where he placed a floral tribute at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

At the event, the president was accompanied by the vice president, J.D. Vance, and the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth.

Background

This is not the first episode in which Trump turns a national date into a platform for confrontation.

In 2018, during his first term, he wrote on the then-platform Twitter that "those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud of how well our country is doing

In August 2024, he was criticized for filming political videos at Arlington National Cemetery without the permission of some families of soldiers whose graves were recorded, leading to an official warning from the Army.

However, his statement on Truth Social set the tone for his day: a mix of political propaganda, ideological insults, and nationalist calls, which many believe is removed from the commemorative spirit that characterizes this date.

Media outlets like CNN have described the message as inappropriate, false, and divisive.
