The family of Devarjaye "DJ" Daniel, a 13-year-old boy, recently revealed a heartbreaking diagnosis just a few months after the teenage brain cancer survivor captured the attention of Americans when he was sworn in as an honorary member of the Secret Service by President Donald Trump.
DJ, who was given five months to live after being diagnosed with brain and spinal cord cancer in 2018, has "three new tumors," his father, Theodis Daniel, said to The White House.
"We pray for Agent DJ Daniel after his father, Theodis, informed us that DJ is now facing three new tumors. DJ is one of the strongest and bravest young individuals, and he has already sworn in with 1,351 security agencies across the country. Agent Daniel, you are a true legend," the official account of The White House announced this Friday.
DJ, who dreams of becoming a police officer, came into the public eye when he was appointed honorary protector of Trump during the president's speech at a joint session of Congress on March 4.
The teenager is about to achieve his goal of taking an oath of office before security forces across the country, which would set a Guinness World Record.
It already holds multiple records, including "the most keys to the city" and "the most days of proclamation."
"Let’s take it day by day. He has three new tumors," Theodis said. "It's tough, there's no class that teaches you how to deal with it. You find out that your child has an unpleasant illness.
Devarjaye grew up watching his father, a military man, interact with law enforcement. It was then, at the age of 9, that his admiration for the uniformed personnel increased, and he decided he wanted a career in law enforcement.
The child has undergone 13 brain surgeries: "Each one has changed my personality. The doctors gave me five months to live, but I'm still here. I will keep going until my gas tank runs out. You never know when God will call you home," he expressed in an interview.
DJ has already received several honors. In 2022, when he was 10 years old, he was named Honorary Chief for a Day at the Miami Police Department thanks to the organization Make-A-Wish, which is dedicated to fulfilling the dreams of children with serious illnesses.
On that occasion, he wore a tailored uniform, patrolled the city in a police car, and participated in training with specialized units.
