Only in Florida! Golfers come across a baby alligator on the course

Golfers in Florida recorded a family of alligator hatchlings and another giant specimen crossing the fairways. The viral images showcase the typical coexistence with this wildlife.

A family of baby alligators surprised several golfers in Florida this week as they peacefully roamed a course, in a scene that was both ordinary and astonishing for the residents of the Sunshine State.

The video was shared this Friday by meteorologist Brian McClure, who humorously wrote on social media: “A regular day in Florida, when you're playing golf and have to walk between a family of baby alligators.”

The images show the small reptiles moving in a group across the grass, completely indifferent to the humans around them.

The scene quickly captured the attention of users, who jokingly commented that the issue wasn’t the babies, but the mother, which led to several questions about her whereabouts.

But it was not the only unusual sighting, as meteorologist Matt Devitt also shared a short clip this Sunday showing a large alligator walking calmly through the Buffalo Creek Golf Course in Palmetto.

"Welcome to Florida... where you can play golf peacefully alongside dinosaurs," Devitt wrote, referring to the prehistoric appearance of the animal.

Both videos, which have gone viral on social media, illustrate the unique coexistence between humans and wildlife in Florida, particularly in areas such as golf courses, residential developments, and reserves near bodies of water.

Authorities have reiterated on various occasions that, although sightings are frequent, it is essential not to feed alligators or attempt to interact with them.

Additionally, they have noted that during the mating season these sightings may become more frequent.

Despite their calm appearance, these animals can react unpredictably if they feel threatened.

Although it may seem unusual to those who do not live in Florida, alligator sightings on golf courses are a common phenomenon in that state.

In March 2024, a video captured by a golfer at the Rotonda Golf & Country Club Palms in southwest Florida showed a massive specimen measuring over three meters crossing the grass with complete tranquility, in a scene that went viral due to the impressive calm of the animal and its proximity to the players.

Months later, in June, another video showed a alligator devouring a large fish in the middle of a golf course, again in Florida.

The author of the recording, from his cart, captured the reptile feeding on what was identified as a devil fish, an invasive species commonly found in the water bodies of the state.

By September of that same year, a third video captured another alligator in action: this time, devouring a small rabbit as a golfer was passing through The Quarry Golf Club in Naples.

Frequently Asked Questions about Alligators in Florida and Their Interaction with the Environment

Is it common to find alligators on golf courses in Florida?

Sightings of alligators on golf courses in Florida are relatively common due to the proximity of these spaces to bodies of water and the natural habitats of these reptiles. It is important to keep a distance and not attempt to interact with them.

What precautions should Florida residents take in the presence of alligators?

Residents of Florida should maintain a safe distance from alligators, not feed them, and ensure that their pets are leashed and kept away from the water’s edge. Authorities recommend being especially vigilant during the mating season, when alligators may be more aggressive.

Why are alligator sightings frequent in urban areas of Florida?

The presence of alligators in urban areas of Florida is due to the constant interaction between wildlife and urban zones, especially during the mating season when these animals increase their activity and movement. Urban areas close to bodies of water are particularly prone to these sightings.

What actions do the authorities take to manage the alligator population in Florida?

Florida has a population control program that regulates alligator hunting to prevent serious incidents and manage the population of these reptiles. This program allows licensed hunters to capture specimens in certain areas of the state as part of a management plan.
