The crime reporter, Niover Licea, specified that the young man died as a result of two stab wounds and that the crime took place in front of the ETECSA office in Contramaestre.

“It is reported that there were three individuals around 17 years old, that is, minors”, Licea stated, who asserted that the motive for the crime was to steal the mobile phone carried by the young man's girlfriend.

Neighbors and close friends of Vargas expressed their grief and outrage on social media, highlighting that he was a hardworking and cheerful young man, full of dreams.

"An excellent boy, a good neighbor, kind-hearted, hardworking, and his family is wonderful. This loss has brought me great sadness. I can only think of his father, Ignacito."

The news sparked a wave of outrage and sadness among family members, friends, neighbors, and citizens across Cuba, who have raised their voices on social media to demand justice and condemn the rising violence affecting the country.

“Roger did not deserve this ending”, wrote another close friend.

“What sadness, a very good, quiet child. I am deeply pained by this news from my town, near my home. May justice be served.”; “Contramaestre mourns the unjust loss of a child with excellent behavior. There are no words of comfort for that family. We demand justice with a firm hand.”; “Contramaestre was one of the most peaceful and safe towns in the country. This is already an incurable disease, and the corrupt political system only cares about its profits.” were some of the comments.

Most have called for a tough hand, the death penalty, or exemplary justice for the murderers.

The general sentiment is that human life in Cuba has lost value due to the impunity of criminals. Reports of violent robberies, assaults, and homicides on the streets of the country are becoming increasingly frequent.

Many people believe that the State has lost control over public safety, allowing armed minors to roam the streets with impunity.

“Death penalty. They knew what they were doing. It wasn't an accident; it was murder”; “We need a Bukele here”; “That's so that parents can take their revenge and kill the one who killed their child. I see no other solution”; were other opinions.

The face of the victim

Roger Vargas was not a criminal. He was a young man like many others: cheerful, family-oriented, with dreams and aspirations. He lived on 15th Street in the Lumumba neighborhood and was with his girlfriend at the time of the crime.

His death has left an immense void not only in his family but also among his university classmates, childhood friends, and neighbors.

“The group needs to go say goodbye to him. He was our friend”; “I know the parents and they are devastated. I stand with the family in their sorrow”;
“A great young man who left a void in many lives”; “We will remember him for his kindness and smile. I ask for justice so that his death does not go unpunished,” testified others who knew him.
