A 15-year-old Mexican teenager, with no criminal record, was wrongfully detained at the controversial Alligator Alcatraz detention center in Florida, where he was held for three days alongside adults, state authorities confirmed to the Miami Herald.

The minor, identified as Alexis, was arrested on July 1 by agents of the Florida Highway Patrol in Tampa, while traveling as a passenger in a vehicle. After being handed over to federal immigration authorities, he was handcuffed and transported to the detention center located in the Everglades, known as Alligator Alcatraz.

During his stay, neither his family nor his lawyer, Katie Blankenship, were able to communicate with him or visit him.

The legal defense warned that the young boy was placed alongside adults in tents and metal mesh cages, in conditions that include overcrowding and lack of access to medical care or legal counsel.

The administration of Governor Ron DeSantis initially denied his presence at the location, but eventually admitted it after being confronted with documentary evidence.

They alleged that the minor lied about his age at the time of detention, a fact that Alexis himself acknowledged out of fear of being separated from his companions.

The situation was reversed after his father, Ignacio, sent a copy of the birth certificate via WhatsApp of the young man.

On July 4th, Alexis was finally moved to a shelter managed by the Federal Refugee Resettlement Office, where he remains in custody.

The story of Alexis adds to the concern over the extent and speed with which state and federal authorities have been detaining and transferring immigrants —even those without criminal records— to the newly opened center, described as part of an offensive to expedite deportations.

The conditions in the facility have been widely criticized: lack of water, spoiled food, inadequate hygiene, and absence of legal and medical communication.

Alligator Alcatraz opened on July 3, 2025, in the Everglades, with a capacity for up to 5,000 adult detainees, operated by Florida with support from DHS.

According to media reports, about 35% of the more than 700 detainees (around 250 people) have no criminal charges, only immigration violations.

Governor DeSantis defended his use of emergency funds to build the facility, while Democrats and NGOs have labeled it as a "detention camp" and have filed lawsuits for violations of civil and environmental rights.
