A Cuban woman shared a video on TikTok depicting the desperate situation she faced after being without electricity for over 30 hours, which caused all the food she had stored to spoil.
"We have been without power in Cuba for over thirty hours. All the food was starting to spoil," denounced the woman, who shared images of her refrigerator completely contaminated by decomposing food.
In the recording, published by the user @sheyreyes032, you can see how the woman empties her refrigerator, rinses the leftover meat and other products in the sink, and moves the appliance to the patio to wash it with water, detergent, and a sponge.
"I had to throw out what little I had in the fridge because, honestly, I'm not buying much food due to the blackouts. Everything smelled bad, sir," she said, visibly frustrated.
The cleaning was carried out in the dark, using a flashlight, as in addition to the blackout, there was a "tremendous downpour," which made it impossible to even operate a generator.
"Honestly, there isn't a human being who can endure this situation," he lamented.
In Cuba, power outages continue to affect the population daily, with extensive cuts lasting over 12 hours in many provinces.
This situation is compounded by food scarcity and the lack of resources to preserve them, which exacerbates the impact of the energy collapse on daily life.
Frequently Asked Questions about Power Outages in Cuba
What is the impact of power outages on the daily lives of Cubans?
Extended blackouts in Cuba severely impact food preservation, access to drinking water, and the rest of the population. Families face food losses due to a lack of refrigeration, and the absence of electricity increases heat in homes, hindering sleep and overall well-being.
How do Cubans cope with the shortage of electricity?
In the face of electricity shortages, many Cubans resort to using charcoal stoves for cooking and seek creative solutions such as charging devices in neighboring houses with generators. Additionally, some try to preserve food using coolers or by making ice in plastic bottles.
What has the Cuban government said about the energy crisis?
The Cuban government has acknowledged the seriousness of the energy crisis, promising investments in photovoltaic parks and improvements in electrical infrastructure. However, the population has lost faith in these promises due to the lack of concrete solutions.
How does the energy crisis economically affect Cuban families?
The energy crisis is raising living costs by causing the loss of expensive food items and the need to seek alternatives for cooking and refrigeration. With high food prices and low average wages, losing products due to power outages represents a significant economic blow for many families.
