The Cuban Miguel Ángel Aguiar Forten, a former member of the national Taekwondo team, was shot and killed recently in Curitiba, in the south of Brazil, where he resided.

Aguiar Forten was killed in the early hours of July 27 in Jardim Ipê de São José dos Pinhais, a municipality that is part of the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, the capital of the state of Paraná.

Along with Aguiar Forten, another man who has not yet been identified died, according to local media. The incident occurred around 1:45 a.m. on the mentioned day, on a street named Laérte Fenelon.

A coordinated and merciless attack

According to preliminary investigations by the Military Police and the Civil Police of Paraná (PCPR), the crime was carried out by the occupants of a white car that passed by the location twice before opening fire.

According to witnesses, the assailants saw the victims on the street and, without saying a word, began to open fire.

Miguel Ángel was shot in the head and fell dead at the scene.

The second man, while trying to flee into a vacant lot, was chased and struck by two shots to the head from about 30 meters away.

When the emergency services from SIATE arrived, both men had already died.

The perpetrators of the crime fled towards the BR-277 highway and have not yet been located.

The motive for the attack remains unknown, and the brutality of the act has raised multiple hypotheses that the authorities are investigating with caution.

A prior meeting with the Municipal Guard

One of the most notable elements of the case is that just a few hours before they were murdered, Miguel and his companion had been approached by Municipal Guards.

According to the police chief, Fábio Machado, in statements to RICtv, officials suspected that the men were stealing electrical cables, although this suspicion was not confirmed.

“What we know is that the Municipal Guard approached these young men moments before. They were suspected of stealing electrical cables. The Municipal Guard identified them, verified that they were not stealing, and released them. Then they were shot and killed,” Machado stated to the mentioned outlet.

This background has raised questions among researchers and the public: Were they followed after the police action? Were they being watched? Or was it a fatal coincidence?

Authorities have begun reviewing security camera footage from the area to piece together the victims' last movements and gather clues about the murderers.

"One of them was unemployed and needed to start a new job. Miguel was an immigrant in the country and had been part of the Cuban Taekwondo team," confirmed the police chief.

“We know that the shooter arrived in this white car, approached the two, and shot one of them. The other boy fled, was chased, and killed,” he added.

"Our team contacted a relative in Cuba. Another relative in Miami, USA, reached out to us and will be interviewed to understand the circumstances that led this young man to leave Cuba and come to Brazil, how he arrived here, and when," the police source added.

The goal is to gain a clearer understanding of their migration process, under what conditions they arrived in Brazil, and whether they may have been involved in any conflict or risky situation.

The lack of key eyewitnesses and the escape of the killers hinder the investigations.

The police chief emphasized that it is still necessary to interview more people before confirming any specific line of investigation.

As of the time this note was written, there is no additional information regarding the murder of the former Cuban athlete.
