The dollar's price rises in Cuba, ending the week by setting a new sales record.

At dawn this Sunday, the US dollar was being sold at 399 CUP, right at the threshold of 400 pesos.

The figure represents an increase of two units compared to the 397 CUP reached on Friday.

Many anticipate that it will continue to rise and may soon narrow the gap with the European currency.

Exchange Rate Evolution

The rise of the dollar in the Cuban informal market primarily reflects the increasing depreciation of the Cuban peso and the lack of confidence in the national currency.

Among the main causes of this escalation are the scarcity of foreign currency in official channels, persistent inflation, a decrease in domestic production, and high demand for dollars for private imports, travel, and savings.

This increase directly affects the purchasing power of the population, raising the prices of basic goods and services that rely on imports, and exacerbating economic inequality between those who have access to foreign currency and those who depend solely on salaries in pesos.

The euro, for its part, maintains the 445 CUP that it has held throughout this week.

The Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), which has been experiencing an unstable streak and continuous declines, remains today at the 210 CUP it reached yesterday.

In mid-July, the Cuban Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz, announced that a new “management, control, and allocation mechanism for foreign currency” would be implemented in the second half of 2025, as part of the so-called “Government Program to Correct Distortions and Revitalize the Economy.”

According to the information released, the new model will include the transformation of the official currency exchange market, the consolidation of financing schemes, and the supposed more efficient redistribution of foreign currency generated by state-owned enterprises.

Meanwhile, the informal market continues to set the trend: the Cuban peso is worth less and less, and remittances from emigrants are the main support for millions of households across the country.
