One of the most striking garbage dumps in Havana has gone viral on social media as a testament to the decline of what was once the splendid Cuban capital.
Shared by the photographer Otmaro Rodríguez in his social media section "Places in 10 seconds.", the trash overflowed from a corner and extends for a block on each side.
Located on Virtudes Street, between Consulado and Industria, it extends alongside the La Habana Musical Theatre.
“For those who haven’t visited Havana in a while, it can be difficult to find iconic places. Such is the case with where the Havana Musical Theatre once stood,” wrote the photographer.
Havana has become the capital of garbage, raising concerns about what has turned into a public health crisis that is already out of control, and for which the regime can find no solution.
The accumulation of garbage spreads throughout the city.
Recently, it was revealed that the uncontrolled accumulation of garbage at several corners of Vedado has put residents of this central Havana neighborhood on alert, as they reported the prevailing unhygienic conditions and warned about the danger this situation poses with the imminent start of the hurricane season.
On streets like 25 and H, 17 and 10, or 13 and 10, the images depict an alarming reality: overflowing garbage bins, makeshift dumps on public roads, and waste accumulating for days without being collected.
The accumulation of waste in the Cerro municipality, in Havana, has once again sparked outrage among residents who report unsanitary conditions and state inaction, while living amidst flies, foul odors, and the fear of diseases.
A Cuban mother, identified as Alejandra Larias, raised her voice on Facebook and shared images of the makeshift dump right at the corner of her block, just a few meters from a school and her own home, where she lives with her young daughter.
Residents of Cerro, Centro Habana, Marianao, and Diez de Octubre have repeatedly reported the proliferation of illegal dumps near schools, hospitals, and homes, without receiving effective responses.
