An image worthy of a horror movie is today part of the everyday landscape in Centro Habana. On the corner of Belascoaín and San Miguel, a building in a state of disrepair is accumulating garbage and threatens to collapse without even a fence or sign warning of the danger.
Carlos Espinosa Betancourt shared in the group Facebook Maravilloso Malecón a complaint accompanied by striking images, describing the scene as “apocalyptic” and comparing it to a “zombie” scenario. The post was supported by photographer Marta Rojas, who captured the extent of the neglect.
The situation has been ongoing for several years, and as time passes, the risk only intensifies. The garbage, debris, and structural deterioration turn the property into a death trap, visible to everyone and met with indifference from local authorities.
An old story
Since February 2020, the official press has echoed the complaint made by Elvira López Pena, who wrote to the Acuse de Recibo section of Juventud Rebelde to express her concern about the danger posed by the building's construction state to pedestrians and vehicles passing through that area.
"On Belascoaín, buses (such as the P9 and P6 routes) and heavy trucks pass by, causing the street to vibrate," the sender noted, expressing concern about the danger it poses.
It is important to remember that three minors, aged between 10 and 11, died in 2020 after a balcony collapsed on them at the intersection of Revillagigedo and Vives streets in the Jesús María neighborhood, an event that not only moved their family members and neighbors but also Cubans both on and off the island.
