The Consulate General of Spain in Havana announced this Monday, September 29, the opening of an official channel on WhatsApp, aimed at providing updated information to citizens interested in its services.

"We invite you to follow us to stay updated with relevant and current information," published the diplomatic mission on its official X account (formerly Twitter), along with the direct link to the new platform.

The decision comes amid growing pressure from thousands of Cubans seeking to complete procedures at the consulate, especially related to obtaining Spanish nationality through the so-called Law of Grandchildren or Law of Democratic Memory.

The deadline to submit new applications is on October 21, which has resulted in long queues, delays in appointments, and a flood of applications in recent weeks.

In that context, the WhatsApp channel could become a tool to enhance communication and reduce user uncertainty, as they have repeatedly reported a lack of timely information, a collapse in service, and the absence of responses to complaints.

Currently, the Consulate in Havana serves the largest community of Spanish descendants outside of Spain. It is estimated that more than 300,000 Cubans are in the process of applying for nationality, and a significant portion is still waiting for a turn to complete their application.

The diplomatic office did not specify what type of content will be shared on its channel, although it is expected to include announcements regarding deadlines, requirements, documentation, schedules, and general updates for those handling consular procedures on the island.
