A neighbor from Cienfuegos reported on social media the violent behavior of a group of teenagers who, according to her account, engage in harassing and verbally assaulting elderly people in the vicinity of the city's business center.

The post was made by Karen García in the Facebook group Revolico Cienfuegos, where she reported having witnessed several incidents around noon, when young people take advantage of school dismissal to push, grab belongings, or insult older individuals in the neighborhood.

“I come to report a problem that is happening in Cienfuegos (...). Some middle school students are bothering the elderly in the neighborhood, pushing them, pulling their belongings, or insulting them,” wrote the user, who claimed to have been a direct witness to one of the incidents.

García explained that he was unable to record the incident, but he warned that if it happens again, he will take pictures and report it to the appropriate authorities.

"The next time, I'm going to record them and upload it to social media, and I will go wherever I need to go, whether it's the police or child protective services," she stated.

In his message, he urged parents to "tighten the screws" and talk to their children about respecting their elders, warning that such actions could lead to a tragedy.

"They target elderly people with that little game because they know they cannot defend themselves, but if this continues, a tragedy could occur, as these individuals also have family to protect them," he added.

Cienfuegos, like other cities in the country, has seen an increase in recent years in neighborhood complaints about social indiscipline and assaults in public spaces, reflecting the growing tension and social decay amid the economic crisis and institutional neglect.

The post generated dozens of supportive and concerned comments from other users who lamented the loss of values and the rise of youth violence in the streets.

Nanevi Solís García described the situation as “outrageous” and urged parents to take responsibility. “Monitor your children, know who they are hanging out with (...). Not all elderly people live alone, and the only outcome of this will be seeking misfortune,” she wrote.

Adrián Francisco Sánchez Cano agreed that the problem begins at home and not in schools. "It's very sad to see how teenagers go about doing as they please. The foundation of every human being's education is the family environment," he expressed.

The user L. Ania Pérez lamented the lack of civility and wrote: “There is no country in the world with more social indiscipline than this, for God's sake, and that is the youth we have.”

Carmen Pérez was more straightforward in calling for a "strong hand," stating that authority and discipline are needed. "That's why I admire the president of El Salvador so much. He asks for nothing more than respect, proper uniforms, and good manners," she said.

For her part, Carmen Estévez Herrera suggested that the complaint should be directed straight to the school of those involved: “It should be a nearby school; it’s shameful what’s happening. The elderly are the most defenseless and vulnerable.”

Other users, like Mirta Martínez, condemned the abuses and described them as “unforgivable,” while Nelson Romero supported the post and urged families to identify those responsible: “The youth are in a very bad situation. If I see that abuse, I won't stay silent.”

Leticia Bomate demanded the intervention of child welfare authorities, and Maricela de Armas recalled that “respect and good behavior are taught at home; school reinforces values, but cannot replace family education.”

In various parts of Cuba, the elderly have become frequent targets of thefts and assaults, reflecting the rising violence affecting the country.

In Havana, a disabled street vendor was assaulted by a young man under the influence of drugs, who snatched her belongings and goods, leaving her even more vulnerable in light of a state pension that does not meet her basic needs.

Similar cases have shaken the capital in recent weeks. A woman with Alzheimer's was found beaten after an assault that occurred while she was wandering alone and disoriented in the Camilo Cienfuegos neighborhood.

In another incident that sparked outrage, a video showed a man violently hitting an elderly woman inside a tourist car on a public road, with witnesses barely reacting.

Violence is also spreading to other provinces. In Camagüey, during a blackout, an elderly woman was brutally assaulted and robbed of her money and cell phone by a young man who took advantage of the darkness to attack her without anyone witnessing the incident.

This type of criminal activity has become increasingly common amid the prolonged power outages.

Street assaults are also recurring. In the Alamar neighborhood, a thief pushed a 72-year-old man to steal his phone, leaving him on the ground before fleeing.

A few days earlier, in Granma, two young men were to steal his electric motorcycle, in an act of violence that highlights the level of impunity with which these aggressors operate.
