A student evacuation took place this Monday at Ciudad Escolar Libertad, in Marianao, the Cuban capital, following reports of a suspected fire in the vicinity of the complex.
Various social media profiles have echoed the news initially reported by Periódico Cubano. However, there is no official version regarding the origin or the magnitude of the incident and the Government has not yet made a statement.
According to testimonies gathered on site and on social media, parents and family members were urgently alerted to pick up the students, and the area was cordoned off by MINFAR and MININT forces.
Witnesses confirmed to the profile of La Tijera that authorities are preventing access and taking photos, while leaders from the PCC of Plaza and Marianao are overseeing the situation on the ground.
Parents reported that they learned through calls from the school and that they are unsure if there will be classes on Tuesday.
Some reports mention a possible fire due to an explosion in the military area warehouses of the complex and that there was concern about the impact on tunnels, although none of this has been confirmed.
“They evacuated all of Ciudad Libertad”, said a mother; another mentioned “panic” and unverified rumors about the explosion of the munitions depot at the military unit of Ciudad Libertad.
"My son studies in Ciudad Libertad and they called the parents to pick them up urgently without giving further reasons because even the teachers didn’t know what was happening. It is rumored that there is a fire in the military unit but it could affect the tunnels and that’s why they evacuated all the students because if the fire reaches the tunnels, it is more difficult to control." said a parent.
Independent media and activists reported the presence of firefighters and police, as well as the evacuation of students. Parents consulted on social media confirm that their children only managed to attend the first shift of classes before the evacuation.
So far, the cause of the fire or explosion, the exact area affected, and the material damages remain unknown.
Families and teachers are awaiting verifiable information about risks, damages, and the resumption of classes.
The situation alarms Cubans who witnessed an explosion two years ago in the same Ciudad Libertad, which caused minor structural damage to buildings in the area.
The explosion, which shattered windows in nearby homes, was caused by a wildfire near munitions depots in Ciudad Libertad.
This year, a similar tragedy occurred in a military materials depot in the town of Melones, Rafael Freyre municipality, Holguín province.
Thirteen people died in the incident, including nine young individuals who were undergoing Military Service.
