The state-run newspaper reported that the boy "was playing with friends in the area" and that his disappearance was reported shortly after he failed to return home.

The official statement indicated that the investigations remain open to determine the circumstances under which the events occurred.

The Artemiseño expressed "deep sorrow" over the tragedy and conveyed condolences to the family and loved ones of the child, emphasizing that the event has shaken the entire municipality.

Initial reports on the disappearance and discovery of the minor

Hours before the newspaper El Artemiseño confirmed the death of young Nelson Thiago García Lugones, social media had already mobilized in search of him.

Residents of El Chumbo, in the municipality of Alquízar, reported his disappearance and shared photographs of the minor under the slogan "Every minute counts."

The five-year-old boy had been last seen on Monday afternoon when he went out to play near his home. When he did not return, his family and neighbors began an extensive search that lasted for hours throughout the area.

Around 1:00 AM, journalist José Luis Tan Estrada confirmed on Facebook that the body of the minor had been found in a well. Firefighters and rescuers arrived at the scene and attempted to revive him, but were unsuccessful.

"The town is shattered; we all knew him, he was a cheerful boy," wrote a local resident.

The case generated an outpouring of grief and calls for justice on social media, where hundreds of users expressed their sorrow over the tragedy and sent messages of solidarity to the family.

"There are no words to comfort that mother," posted another internet user.

Testimonials from some neighbors described the well as a deep structure covered in vegetation, raising doubts about whether the child could have fallen in accidentally.

“Let us hope that justice is served for the boy Thiago,” wrote the user Jessica Barnet Hernández, from Alquízar.

The death of little Thiago has shocked the entire province and reignited the debate on child safety and transparency in cases involving minors in Cuba.
