The Union of Railways of Cuba (UFC) confirmed on Monday that the man found deceased near the train line in Santiago de Cuba did not die as a result of a railway accident, according to the preliminary results of the ongoing investigation.
In an informative note published on , the state-owned company specified that the body was found "during the morning of the day before yesterday" along a stretch of the railway in that eastern city, but investigations revealed that no train struck the individual.
"The death was not caused by a train accident. Investigations confirm that the individual was not struck by a train," states the official report, which aims to put an end to the speculation that circulated following the discovery.
According to the UFC, the section where the body was found is only used by national trains for car shunting maneuvers, and no convoy was recorded passing through the area the previous night.
The discovery, initially reported by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, caused shock among the people of Santiago, who expressed their concern over the rise in violent incidents and the lack of timely information from the authorities.
Residents of the area, located between Paseo de Martí and Avenida Patria, claim that it is a spot frequented by pedestrians looking for shortcuts between the two main arteries of the city. However, the incident has rekindled the debate about rising insecurity and the lack of patrols in poorly lit areas.
So far, the identity of the deceased and the exact causes of death have not been revealed, while the relevant authorities continue their investigations.
The Union of Railways assured that it will keep the public informed through its official channels when there are new details about the case.
