A Cuban living abroad surprised her followers on TikTok by revealing how much money she needs every time she travels to Cuba.
In a video posted by user @saylin4020, the young woman explained that her personal experience highlights how expensive it is to return to the island, especially for those looking to bring gifts and assistance to their relatives.
"Well, I'm going to speak from my experience, not that of others. The ticket cost a little over a thousand; for car rental, it was over three thousand; and for shopping, I'm already over a thousand dollars," the woman recounted.
Additionally, he clarified that these expenses include the items he sends before traveling and the money he takes to spend during his stay.
"When we go, we stay for 15 days, and we bring about 5,000 dollars. When you add everything up—flights, car rental, everything—it easily comes to 15,000 dollars or even more, depending on what you buy. I’m telling you this because on my first trip, I spent that amount of money," she stated.
The testimony sparked a broad debate among Cubans both on and off the island, many of whom agreed that the costs of traveling to Cuba have skyrocketed in recent years due to the rising prices of plane tickets, car rentals, and the devaluation of the Cuban peso.
Meanwhile, most emigrants continue to send remittances or travel with suitcases full of food, medicines, and basic goods for their families, in a context where the average salary in Cuba barely covers a few days' worth of food.
The user's testimony joins those of many Cubans who are highlighting the high prices associated with traveling to Cuba. Amid the economic crisis, characterized by inflation, shortages, and a lack of fuel, traveling to the country has not only become a luxury but also an act of sacrifice for thousands of émigrés who support their families on the island.
