A Cuban woman has gone viral on TikTok after sharing a video where she demonstrates how to roast coffee in a traditional way out in the countryside, using a pot over hot coals and then spreading the beans on a sack to cool them down.
The clip, posted by user @anay.negrin, shows the step-by-step process: the woman heats the beans until they are completely blackened and then pours them onto a white sack, stirring them with a slotted spoon to cool them down.
However, what seemed like a simple demonstration of everyday life in the Cuban countryside unleashed a flood of comments with a humorous tone. Many users claimed that the coffee was "too burnt" and that it looked more "charred" than roasted.
"Is that toasted or charcoal?" one joked. "After that, no one is going to drink the coffee; it must taste horribly bitter," another commented. "That's too much; that's not coffee, it's roasted pea," wrote a third.
In Cuba, where making coffee is almost a family ritual, many have had to resort to homemade methods for roasting the beans due to the scarcity of the product and high prices in the market. However, as reflected in the comments, not everyone agrees on the ideal technique to achieve a good flavor.
Despite the criticism, the video has been viewed thousands of times, once again reflecting the ingenuity —and humor— with which Cubans tackle their daily lives, even when preparing their essential cup of coffee.
