The Lady in White Leticia Ramos Herrería was arrested this Saturday by State Security in Cárdenas, Matanzas.
According to a report from her son on the Facebook profile of the opposition figure, "my mother was taken into custody an hour ago by an official from State Security and a police patrol."
The young man spread images showing the arrest of the Dama de Blanco.
"My mother has been peacefully protesting for days about the situation of political prisoners and the critical conditions we all Cubans are living in. Last night and into the early morning, my mother spoke out strongly against the regime, and it seems that the informants have been activated since my mother arrived in Cuba," she stated.
The young man held “the Cuban regime responsible for anything that may happen to my mom, who has seriously deteriorated health and suffers from heart issues.”
"They're not going to silence us; they're going to have to kill us," he concluded.
Ramos Herrería, who is the representative of the Damas de Blanco in Matanzas, has faced systematic harassment from the political police of the Cuban regime due to her opposition work.
With over twenty years of existence, the Damas de Blanco have established themselves as an emblem of peaceful resistance in Cuba. Their image—women dressed in white and carrying gladioli during their Sunday marches—has become a symbol of dignity in the face of repression.
Under the leadership of Berta Soler, the movement has steadfastly maintained its activism despite the constant harassment from State Security. International recognition soon followed: in 2005, they received the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought awarded by the European Parliament.
Recently, Soler was honored with the Lech Wałęsa Solidarity Award 2025 for her work in defending democracy and human rights in Cuba.
