Former English footballer David Beckham has been officially named a Knight of the Order of the British Empire, in a solemn ceremony held at Windsor Castle and presided over by King Charles III.
From this moment on, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player will be known as Sir David Beckham, a recognition that highlights his outstanding sports career, his humanitarian work, and his role as a global ambassador for the United Kingdom.
Visibly emotional, Beckham shared a message filled with gratitude on social media: “I can't even begin to describe what a special day this is for me, a boy born in East London, receiving a knighthood from His Majesty the King. I am truly honored and very grateful for this honor. I have been lucky to represent our country, and I have always done so with pride.”
The former footballer also recalled his origins and the journey that led him to this moment: “I could have never dreamed that this would happen to me... From Ridgeway Rovers to Manchester United to Preston North End to Real Madrid to LA Galaxy to AC Milan to Paris Saint Germain and of course England, all the clubs I have played for, with the best coaches and teammates, and loyal fans who have helped me get to where I am today... I am so grateful to them all... Playing for my country will always be the proudest moment of my career... representing England and captaining my country was my dream at 7 years old.”
Additionally, Beckham dedicated the recognition to his family, highlighting the fundamental role of his wife and children: “Everything I have ever wanted to do is make my family proud. My parents and grandparents who have always been there for me and instilled in me the right values of hard work and respect. My beautiful wife who has stood by my side for the past 28 years, who has been my greatest support and my shoulder to cry on in difficult times... without her, I wouldn’t have had the life I’ve had. To my beautiful children, of whom I am so proud, I know this is a proud and inspiring day for them as well.”
During the ceremony, Beckham was accompanied by his wife, Victoria Beckham, who didn't hide her emotion and pride. Through her social media, she shared images of the moment the king presented the award, along with a heartfelt message.
“David, since the moment I met you 28 years ago, you have always been so proud to represent your country. Whether on or off the field, no one loves England or respects our Royal Family more than you, so seeing you honored by the King today is something I will always appreciate. You have achieved so much, yet you remain the same kind, humble, and hardworking man I met nearly 30 years ago, as well as the most incredible husband and father. I have never felt prouder than I do today. Mr. David Beckham, we all love you very much,” Victoria wrote.
The investiture of Sir David Beckham joins him to the select group of British figures who have received one of the highest honors from the monarchy, a symbol of respect and gratitude for his contributions to sports and society.
