The Cuban opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer stated on Wednesday that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is informed about the situation on the island and committed to the well-being of the Cuban people.

After a meeting in Washington at the State Department, the coordinator of the Cuban Patriotic Union (UNPACU) emphasized that Marco Rubio “is well aware of the situation in Cuba” and “deeply committed to alleviating the harsh living conditions of the Cuban people and to the struggle for the freedom of our homeland.”

Afirmó que during the meeting se abordaron temas como la Repression in Cuba, la situation of political prisoners, las human rights violations y la deep humanitarian crisis que atraviesa la nación caribeña.

Ferrer explained that the living conditions of thousands of Cubans suffering from the consequences of the energy collapse, food scarcity, and lack of medications were discussed.

“I thanked the government of the United States for its offer of support following the recent weather disaster that affected several provinces of the country, and I requested that humanitarian aid be channeled through the Catholic Church, as there are many people who have gone days without food, suffering from arbovirus-related illnesses and lacking access to medication,” the opposition leader stated.

Ferrer announced that during his stay in Washington he will hold new meetings with officials of the U.S. government and with international human rights organizations to continue denouncing the repression of the Cuban regime.

On Wednesday night, Ferrer was honored with the Freedom Award, a recognition given in Washington to individuals who advocate for human rights and democracy in authoritarian contexts.

This Thursday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Cuban regime, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, lashed out at Rubio for meeting with Ferrer, and labeled the opposition as “criminals, abusers of women, and violators of human rights.”
