A deep sadness envelops the South Florida community following the death of Officer Devin Jaramillo, 27, who lost his life this Friday during a shooting in the Kendall area of southwest Miami-Dade County.
The agent responded to a vehicle crash in the area of Southwest 120th Street, near the Florida Turnpike, when he was "brutally attacked and murdered," in the words of Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz.
Police sources reported that the attacker, after shooting Jaramillo, took his own life at the scene, while another person was taken into custody for questioning.
The tragic incident prompted a massive mobilization of agents and the closure of several roads in the area while investigations were underway. “This is not right,” expressed Sheriff Cordero-Stutz, visibly affected.
The mayor Daniella Levine Cava deeply regretted the incident and extended her condolences to the officer's family. “My heart goes out to their loved ones and colleagues as our entire community mourns this devastating loss,” she wrote on social media.
Devin Jaramillo was a young man dedicated to public service. He graduated in 2019 with a degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Florida (UCF) and began his career at the Coral Gables Police Department, where he was recognized as Officer of the Month in July 2023.
Later, he joined the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO), excelling in gun trafficking operations.
In a show of respect, the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office organized a motorcade through southwest Miami, where his colleagues paid their final respects to the young officer, remembered for his bravery, professionalism, and dedication to the community.
