The Cuban Yenney Caballero reported on Facebook about a man who is allegedly trying to scam pedestrians using an increasingly common method in Cuba: the false ring trick.
“Alert! I just ran into this criminal in El Cotorro. He’s one of those scammers who drops fake rings on the floor to deceive people, robbing them of their gold jewelry. He targets anyone wearing chains, rings, or anything of value. Please be very cautious,” wrote Caballero.
According to her account, the incident occurred on Central Street, one block after the municipal church, where the alleged scammer was accompanied by another individual. “This is always done by two people,” the complainant commented on Facebook.
In the shared video, the man is seen covering his face and fleeing the scene after realizing he was being filmed. The post quickly went viral and sparked numerous comments from neighbors who claim to have witnessed similar situations in other areas of the capital.
One of the most striking comments recounted another scam attempt with a similar story. It all starts with the supposed discovery of six gold rings and a typed note requesting that they be given to "an Italian" who was supposed to pay more than 700 dollars or euros for each one.
According to the testimony, those involved offered part of the "loot" as a gift to gain trust while they searched for a jeweler to sell the pieces. "They are on the run; you can't trust anyone these days," warned the internet user.
These types of scams involving rings or fake jewelry have become common in various areas of the country, particularly in municipalities of Havana, where criminals take advantage of the economic crisis and scarcity to deceive trusting individuals or the elderly.
So far, the authorities have not commented on this case, but residents of El Cotorro are demanding increased police presence and surveillance in the streets to prevent this type of fraud from occurring.
