A magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook northeastern Japan on Sunday, November 9, 2025, reported the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The earthquake, recorded at 5:03 PM local time (08:03 GMT), had its epicenter off the coast of Iwate prefecture, where a tsunami warning has been issued.

According to a report by the agency EFE, in the prefectures of Iwate and Miyagi, the earthquake reached level 4 on the Japanese seismic scale, which measures the intensity of shaking at the surface.

The tsunami alert issued is at a low level, with projections of waves up to one meter high, according to the public broadcaster NHK.

The Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, urged the population to remain vigilant: “Please pay close attention to future information, as the tsunami that may arrive could be larger than expected. There is also the possibility of aftershocks,” she warned on her X account.

Japan is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most seismically active regions on the planet, and frequently experiences strong earthquakes. Thanks to its advanced seismic engineering, the country is well-prepared to mitigate damage in such emergencies.
