Cuban internationalist Misael Pupo Fernández, residing in the municipality of Báguanos, province of Holguín, posted a message on Facebook directly addressing president Miguel Díaz-Canel, condemning the complete abandonment of his family following the passage of the hurricane Melissa.

In his testimony, Pupo Fernández highlighted the precarious conditions in which his family lives —with collapsed walls, a roof about to fall, and a single post supporting the house— and expressed regret that no authority has come to offer assistance.

“This sick and vulnerable family has been living in deplorable conditions for nine years. The leaders of the Báguano municipality, as well as the provincial Party of Holguín, are aware of this, and they have not provided us with a solution,” she reported.

According to the account, the hurricane left the roof full of holes, knocked down a wall, and put the house at risk of collapsing, so her children are sleeping on the floor of their grandmother's house.

"Until now, no one from the Civil Defense has come. Everything is getting wet, the mattress is ruined and the stove as well," lamented the resident of Holguín.

"They mock your word, president."

In another post, Pupo Fernández criticized the indifference of local authorities and the lack of institutional response, despite the regime's promises.

“To let the world know how poorly we are treated in my country, Cuba, especially when there is so much talk about human rights: it has been seven days since cyclone Melissa passed, and until today, neither Civil Defense nor the social worker has come. The delegate only came on the third day to say that there is no place for us,” she wrote.

The internationalist, who claims to have served the Revolution on missions abroad, accused the municipal and provincial governments of "blocking" vulnerable citizens:

"We can say that we have a second blockade, that of the leaders of Báguanos," he stated.

She also recalled a phrase by Fidel Castro to question the lack of action from the current government: “No force is capable of defeating those who are determined to fight for their rights,” she quoted.

The other side of the official discourse

While state media spreads images of leaders at "solidarity" events and promises of reconstruction, dozens of families in eastern Cuba are still waiting for assistance after Hurricane Melissa, which devastated entire communities in Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, and Granma.

The testimony of Misael Pupo Fernández reflects the daily reality of thousands of Cubans forgotten by the State, who face misery and bureaucratic abandonment without resources or answers.

"I hope that you, compañero president, will make this municipality work and that we will be attended to as the Revolution demands," he concluded in his message, amidst rubble, dampness, and unkept promises.
