The Cuban priest Alberto Reyes denounced this Friday that the Cuban regime is exacerbating the health and social crisis in the country as a deliberate strategy to "crush the hope" of the people and prevent a new uprising.
In his post on Facebook, the father from Camagüey reflected on the current situation in the country and proposed a hypothesis that he considers evident: Cuba is experiencing a national health crisis that the Government has not officially acknowledged nor taken any significant action to address.
"It is evident that there is a national health crisis, and that the Government has not officially declared a health emergency nor has it taken any significant action to address it," wrote the priest.
Reyes criticized the regime's indifference to the suffering of the people and pointed out that the measures announced by the government will only make "the life of this people more painful and difficult."
Drawing on the theories of sociologist James C. Davies, the priest explained that people do not rebel in the midst of extreme misery, but rather when an improvement comes to a sudden halt, generating frustration and anger.
From that perspective, he warned that the regime seeks to keep Cubans without hope, worsening living conditions to prevent a new social outbreak like the one on July 11, 2021.
“If the Government wants to avoid a rebellion like that of 11J at all costs, it cannot allow improvements that foster expectations and hopes,” he stated.
"That's why we must crush hope more and more; that's why we must worsen people's lives, leaving them to fend for themselves in sickness and poverty," he insisted.
Reyes concluded his message with an uplifting reflection, trusting in the Cuban people's ability to break that cycle of oppression: “Human beings are remarkable, and they could one day rise up, looking at their misery and seriously asking themselves: ‘Why must I continue living like this?’. And from that question to the definitive ‘Enough is enough!’, there is only one step.”
Father Alberto Reyes has established himself as one of the most steadfast and consistent voices within the Cuban clergy against the regime, while also embodying the profound humanism of his vocation.
In one of his strongest denunciations, he described the Cuban government's management as "genocide", holding it responsible for the structural collapse faced by the population, where there is a shortage of medications, medical assistance, and the basic conditions for a dignified life.
Months earlier, he pointed to Fidel Castro himself as the one responsible for having sowed the shamelessness in the Cuban political and social structure, by imposing a logic of impunity, manipulation, and repression that, according to the priest, continues to be present today.
In that same vein, he accused the regime established by Fidel of substituting truth with fear, fostering a culture of silence, denial, and distortion of reality, even within the family and spiritual spheres of Cubans.
More recently, he stated that those who govern the island do not care for the Cuban people, but rather hold them in deep contempt, and that this contempt is reflected in every political decision that deepens misery, hopelessness, and daily dehumanization.
