Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of the most recognized voices of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement and representative from the state of Georgia, has announced her resignation from Congress.
The news, which surprised even his most loyal followers, was announced on the night of this Friday through an extensive video of more than ten minutes posted on his social media.
In it, the congresswoman explains that she will leave her seat on January 5, 2026, following a deep rift with President Donald Trump, her former political ally.
Greene, known for her incendiary style and her closeness to the American far-right, justified her decision by a growing dissatisfaction with the functioning of Congress and, above all, with what she described as a lack of reciprocity in political loyalty.
" loyalty must be mutual, and we should be able to vote according to our conscience and represent the interests of our district, because our role is, quite literally, that of 'representative,'" he stated.
From the heart of MAGA to falling from grace
Greene's resignation marks a turning point in the relationship between Trump and the more radical wing of the Republican Party.
Elected in 2020 to represent Georgia's 14th district, the legislator quickly established herself as one of the most prominent figures in the Capitol.
Her staunch defense of Trump during his years out of power, her support for conspiracy theories like QAnon, and her denial of the 2020 election results made her a polarizing yet central figure within the MAGA movement.
However, that alliance began to erode in recent months.
The catalyst was Greene's decision to support the declassification of documents related to the pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
Trump, who had been close to the financier for years, publicly opposed the measure.
The congresswoman not only signed the petition but also actively pressured for a vote in the House, confronting the Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, for keeping the issue blocked for weeks.
Trump's response was explosive. He referred to her as "traitorous" and "eccentric," and warned that he would support any Republican rival who ran against her in the primaries.
"Marjorie went crazy," she wrote on her social network Truth Social.
In a phone interview with ABC, the president described his resignation as “great news for the country.”
A breakup marked by foreign policy, health, and Epstein
The distancing was not limited to the Epstein case.
Greene criticized Trump's stance on foreign policy, particularly his "excessive attention" to Israel, a country that the congresswoman has accused of committing "a massacre in Gaza."
He also expressed disagreement with Republican leadership proposals to cut parts of Obamacare.
In his video this Friday, he lamented that his bills have been ignored: “The legislature has mostly been sidelined [...] my projects just collect dust.”
Although he reiterated his appreciation for Trump, he was decisive regarding the personal cost of continuing a political battle within his own party: “I have too much self-respect and dignity, I love my family too much, and I don’t want my beloved district to have to endure a painful and hate-filled primary against me from the president we all fought for.”
Of conspiracies and controversies
Since her arrival in Congress, Greene has been a figure marked by controversy.
He supported unfounded theories about the September 11 attacks, promoted misinformation about the pandemic, and compared the mandatory use of masks to the Holocaust.
He even suggested that the wildfires in California were caused by "space lasers" controlled by an influential Jewish family.
In 2019, he questioned the legitimacy of Muslim congresswomen for taking their oath of office on the Quran instead of the Bible. And during President Biden's speeches in Congress, he did not hesitate to interrupt him, shouting for tougher immigration policies.
However, in recent times, he had begun to soften his tone.
In a recent interview with CNN -a network he used to avoid- he expressed some regret for his “tense rhetoric” from the past.
Immediate repercussions and the future of the Republican Party
The resignation of Greene not only signifies the loss of a central figure in the MAGA movement within the House of Representatives, but it also weakens the already fragile Republican majority.
His departure forces the governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp, to call for special elections within ten days, which could temporarily disrupt the legislative balance of power.
Moreover, Greene's case serves as a reminder of the pressure faced by Republican lawmakers who dare to dissent from Trump.
His resignation aligns him with other figures who have left their positions after breaking with the president, confirming that the Republican Party remains an unstable ground for those who do not submit to Trump's leadership.
In closing, the congresswoman bid farewell with a personal message: “My life is filled with happiness, and my true convictions remain unwavering, because my self-worth is not defined by a man, but by God.”
